Where to rest your head | All Things to do
Icehotel is constructed of thirty thousand tonnes of snow and four thousand tonnes of ice (cut from the Torne River); its exact shape and design changes from year to year, though there’s always a chapel. From the entrance hall there’s usually one main walkway filled with ice sculptures, from which smaller corridors lead off to the bedrooms and suites -all with electric lights, and beds made out of blocks of compact snow covered with reindeer hides, that make up the bulk of the hotel.
So it is not only a hotel which is built each winter, it is an ephemeral art project. Accommodation options include Snow Rooms, Ice Rooms and elegantly sculpted Art Suites.
Savour the taste of Absolut vodka infused with lingonberry juice at the ICEBAR. Have your meals at the ICEHOTEL or Homestead restaurants both of which use local ingredients such as arctic raspberries, white fish roe and venison occasionally even served on ice plates.
December to March is an ideal time for a holiday in Lapland, when both snow conditions and northern lights displays are at their peak.
While there do try traditional slow food such as souvas made from reindeer meat and locally caught arctic char.
